9 different leadership styles.
You need to master all 9, if you want to be a great manager or leader. The styles include Autocratic, Transformational, Laissez-Faire, and Charismatic Leadership.
So says a recent LinkedIn post, which has amassed over 600 likes and nearly 200 reposts. It also comes with a fancy infographic. Who doesn’t love a picture? It’s that visual-attraction, designed to reel us in and convince us that the author is onto something (much like my own, with this particular post 🤔).
Now apparently, not only should you fully understand your own leadership style, you need to know how and when to adapt it. You must then adjust your style – to one of the 9 the author has cleverly created – based on what your team needs.
All those likes and reposts. Must be really good advice, right?
Wrong.
Try this instead:
✅ Just … Be … You.
Yep, it’s that simple. No need to remember a bunch of different leadership styles – err, people struggle to remember two or three things, let alone 9. Nor do you want to sit at your desk, head in hands, working out what mask (aka: style) you need to wear today.
Of course, my advice to “Just Be You” assumes you’re not an ass. Or difficult, or nasty. If the real you isn’t a very nice person, we’re in trouble from the off (and you definitely shouldn’t be a manager). But I’m guessing you’re a decent person; that you have a good set of values, standards and principles. And a bit of kindness.
Good management isn’t rocket science. Ignore those who try to make it so. Or who tell you to adopt silly tactics or clever tricks. Instead?
👉 Help your team be the very best they can be.
That requires you to think, listen, learn, understand, solve problems, inspire, coach … and all the other goodies that fabulous managers do every day. But do it your way; one unique way.
Nine leadership styles? Close … just eight too many.
