“When am I getting promoted?”
If you’re a manager, you’ve probably heard this question – and sometimes way sooner than you’d expect. Perhaps even from a staff member who’s still finding their footing in their current role, yet already eyeing the next rung on the ladder.
Ambition is great. But promotions shouldn’t be rushed. So, how do you handle those eager for rapid advancement?
Here’s a simple approach involving one of mankind’s most humble, yet powerful, inventions: the Nail.
Specifically, you can ask your eager-beavers a few pointed questions:
👉 First things first: are you nailing your current role?
(They might say “yes”, or “of course.”)
👉 No, really … are you absolutely nailing it?
Then comes my favourite part:
👉 We should get clear on what that means. What does ‘nailing it’ look like to you?
(After they answer, follow up with:)
👉 Here’s what I think ‘nailing it’ looks like for your role.
These questions will spark a thoughtful conversation. You need skill, tact, and patience to guide it, but the goal is simple: to help your team member see that top-notch performance is way more than just “doing well.” Because it’s top-notch performance – over a sustained period of time, mind you – that puts someone in the running for a promotion.
Did I hear time? I do like a segue. Cue your final question:
👉 Even if we agree you’re nailing your current role … how long should someone at your level keep nailing it for? A month? A year? 3 years? 5 years?
The higher the position, the greater the time needed to master it. Let’s not forget, there are also the needs of your team and the business to factor in. And what constitutes a fair return on the investment in that person?
It’s about setting clear expectations. If your staff member realises they’re not quite ready for that next big leap after all, help them identify the skills and milestones required to achieve it. Focus on growth in their current role, keep having honest career conversations, and build a realistic timeline for progression. Doing so ensures their flame of enthusiasm doesn’t flicker and die.
Managing ambition isn’t about slowing it down. It’s about balancing eagerness with readiness. Help them build a strong foundation, and they’ll achieve long-term success; not just the next shiny promotion.
All hail the nail. 🔨
