In the hustle of daily work, managers often get caught up in urgent tasks, endless meetings, and demanding staff. It’s the “noise” of office world.
The danger? It can consume us. And prevent us from seeing the (often more important) big picture.
Recently, the boss* and I drove out to the Macedon Ranges in Country Victoria. We stayed in a tiny house, hidden away on a farmer’s property. In the middle of nowhere. That’s it in the photo. Yes, it sure was small: essentially a single room, combining a bed with a clever mini kitchen, and a bathroom hidden behind an internal door.

A brief escape: two nights. Long enough to act as a “circuit break”, as the boss called it. It helped me step away from my own noisy world of work, providing an opportunity to reset, relax, recharge. And simply think. Cooking on an open fire and being in the country with nobody around, also meant I was easily able to reflect on the future of my business. And work out the next steps (which some people like to call strategic planning). Oh and if you ever do something similar: jacket potatoes on an open fire are terrific! Remember to bring butter and cheese with you.
Managers, in particular, need this regular circuit-breaker. Away from the daily noise. A chance to grab a helicopter view of yourself, your team, and the business. In these moments, ask yourself some questions:
👉 How is the team going?
👉 Are you headed in the right direction (wherever you deem that to be)? Or do you need to change tack?
👉 How is each individual team member? What do they need from you, right now?
👉 What do YOU need?
That last one is the most crucial of the lot. Because you need to be in a good place for your team to prosper. Nothing earth-shattering; straightforward but useful questions. To find the right answers, escaping the noise is the key.
Maybe it’s time you headed to a tiny house?
You’ll love cooking on the open fire. And might just find the answers you’re looking for.
